YoungArts Finalist Jonathan Lovett ’19 Participates in National YoungArts Week in Miami

Senior Jonathan Lovett, an emerging photographer and member of Viewpoint’s Conservatory of Theater, returned from YoungArts Week in Miami on January 13 with a new and exciting confidence in himself as an artist, and a greater certainty in his plan to make a career in the arts.

This past fall, Jonathan was selected as one of 130 National YoungArts finalists out of more than 7,000 applicants. YoungArts is the nation’s most prestigious youth arts program and the singular path to becoming a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. The YoungArts finalists are considered to be among the country’s most promising young artists in the visual, literary, design, and performing arts. This year, the YoungArts program received 800 photography portfolios – the most ever – and Jonathan was among the selected 10 finalists.
Each January, the finalists gather in Miami for National YoungArts Week to connect and collaborate with other talented and accomplished young artists. For Jonathan, this opportunity gave him what he said was one of the best weeks of his life. He elaborated, “I connected immediately with the other finalists. I felt like I had known them for years, and I was sad to come home. I am sure I will be working with them in the future.”

During the intensive program, Jonathan participated in master classes and workshops with internationally recognized leaders in photography and arts publishing. Each evening, the participants experienced the work of their fellow finalists through performances in voice, jazz, theater, dance, and classical music, as well as film screenings, writers’ readings, and a visual arts, photography, and design exhibition in the YoungArts Gallery.

Jonathan added, “I left home the week before seeing myself as a photographer and an actor, and after this very interdisciplinary experience I returned seeing myself as an artist. The program encourages collaboration with students working in other disciplines. YoungArts helped me to see that everything is interconnected. It was amazing.”
