Music

The Music Department offers students a wide range of courses that afford all students the opportunity to make lifelong connections to the art form by experiencing music of different time periods, styles, and cultures through listening, study, creation, and performance. We believe that music is an important part of every child’s education. Our program is set up so that all students, those who are serious musicians and those who are novices, are successful and challenged at the same time.

Instruction begins in Kindergarten as students begin their musical journey by exploring music vocally and playing Orff and rhythm instruments. In Fourth Grade all students play the recorder and in Fifth Grade all students play a band or orchestral instrument. Optional string instruction can begin as early as First Grade. All Primary and Lower School students participate in a variety of musical performances in School assemblies throughout the year.

Beginning in Sixth Grade, students make the choice of participating in orchestra, band, or chorus, while Seventh Grade marks a student’s first opportunity to engage in formal jazz study. In addition to many in school and evening performance opportunities for both vocal and instrumental students, our Upper School students also have the opportunity to study AP Music Theory and Composition.

We take advantage of our proximity to Los Angeles, by inviting guests to lead masterclasses and rehearsals with our music students and occasionally attend performances.
