Aligned with the School’s mission of promoting integrity, responsibility, and optimism in its students, the college counseling program recognizes the uniqueness of each child. We provide personalized attention, encourage confidence in students, and prepare them to thrive in college and beyond.

  • College Counselors are academic advisors who:

    • Work with all students to craft a personalized academic program throughout Upper School.
    • Empower students to achieve balance with the right combination of courses and activities.
    • Promote in students a love of learning by engaging in inspiring courses with committed teachers.
    • Encourage students to take responsibility for their own education.
    • Advocate on behalf of students with teachers and administrators.
    • Collaborate with faculty to understand the best course selection for each student in each subject.
    • Help students create Independent Study and Viewpoint Scholar projects.
  • College Counselors are experts on college admission and can help students:

    • Research and discover colleges that are academic, social, and financial fits.
    • Craft college lists that yield options.
    • Develop a personalized ACT/SAT testing plan.
    • Write strong applications that highlight strengths and distinctive qualities.
    • Review financial aid awards.
    • Weigh the merits of their college options and choose a college to attend
    • Understand the admissions landscape by building strong relationships with admissions officers at colleges and universities
  • Every Ninth Grader is assigned to their College Counselor, a relationship designed to:

    • Maximize student potential and success.
    • Meet the needs, challenges, and goals of every student.
    • Enrich connection, confidence, and empowerment of students.
    • Be honest and characterized by trust and open communication between counselors, students, and parents.
    • Enrich the connection between counselor and student that leads to strong advocacy in the college application process.
  • Serving the broad range of Viewpoint students, College Counselors will:

    • Nominate appropriate candidates for specialized scholarships and programs such as Questbridge, Posse, the UNC Morehead Cain Scholarship, the UVA Jefferson Scholars program, and many college diversity fly-in programs.
    • Support students with learning differences.
    • Promote financial aid awareness.
    • Assist with UCAS and international college admissions applications.
    • Counsel NCAA DI-III recruited athletes.
    • Advocate for students directly with college admission officers

College Counseling Programs for Grades 9-12

Programs designed to help students reflect on who they are and the kinds of colleges that will help them reach their goals are offered at every grade level in high school. Students are well prepared to apply to college during senior year.

  • Standardized Testing Night for Sophomores and Juniors
  • 150 College Reps Visiting Campus in the Fall
  • Case Studies Program for Juniors and Parents

  • Summer Enrichment Fair
  • Individual and Family College Counseling Meetings
  • Class Meetings for 9-12 Grades
  • Workshops—Application, Financial Aid, Resume, Interview
  • Parent Meetings on College Process, Academic Advising, Summer Enrichment
  • SAT and ACT Preparation—diagnostic tests and winter classes
  • East Coast College Tour for Juniors
  • College Athletic Night and College Athlete Recognition Day
