Community Service Day Reaches Local Areas and Beyond

"Viewpoint’s students learn the importance of service to others and to the greater community with the expectation that this introduction becomes a lifelong commitment."

This sentence above is from the School's Mission Statement and is a key component of a Viewpoint education in all grades. The day before Thanksgiving, more than 240 students and faculty participated in Community Service Day, which is an annual day of service in the Upper School.
Students and faculty participated in several projects, including:

West Valley Food Pantry: Students sorted and packed donations from Viewpoint familes and others, which were then distributed to families for Thanksgiving.
Los Angeles LGBT Center: Volunteers helped organize the Center's clothing closet and participated in activies with youth members.
Hearts for Heroes: Students designed cards and wrote letters to thank military veterans.
My Stuff Bags Foundation: Volunteers stuffed bags with age-appropriate items for children living in foster care, crisis shelters, domestic violence shelters, and homeless shelters.
Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission: Students packed approximately 250 sack lunches and transported them to HOV.
Heal the Bay: Volunteers removed trash from the beach and logged that information for HTB.
Project Angel Food: Volunteers prepared meals for those affected by serious illness.
Special Spirit: Volunteers helped organize the tack room and clean out other areas of this equine therapy organization.

Additionally, volunteers wrote letters of gratitude to the first responders to the Woolsey Fire.

"Over the last several weeks, we have heard from countless members of the Viewpoint community who have said nothing is more important than the love and support of family and friends, said Pam OseranskyCoordinator of Service Learning in the Upper School. "Community Service Day at Viewpoint School allows Upper School students to connect and share that same spirit with many people in the larger community who need it most. That’s what community is all about."
