Earlier this month, the Middle School presented their fall musical, Seussical, in the Carlson Family Theater.
Auditions were open to all Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade students and were held the second week of school, with rehearsals beginning the third week. The cast had eight weeks of intense rehearsals, which consisted of learning the music, blocking, choreography, character development, and perfecting all technical elements of the show.
Written by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, this musical celebrates the works of Dr. Seuss. Seussical blends elements from his most famous books, as well as many of his best-loved characters. Unexpectedly, many meet for the first time in the show. Together they create a story of friendship, loyalty, and what it’s like to truly stand up for what (or Who) you believe in. Over the course of the show they travel from the Jungle of Nool to The Planet of Who to McElligott’s Pool, some fall in love, some have desperate adventures, and some will save the world. Dr. Seuss believes in helping a friend, in not giving up, and in keeping a promise. He believes in the value and dignity of others, in working to preserve the fragility of the natural world, and he believes that peace is the ultimate ideal, among nations and in every heart. Mostly though, he believes in the pure power of imagination. All of these serious concerns are at the heart of Seussical.
The show featured standout performances by Colin N. ’24 as “The Cat In the Hat”, Kaelin S. ’28 as “Boy/JoJo”, AJ Williams ’23 as “Horton The Elephant”, Laurel E. ’24 as “Gertrude McFuzz”, Mia N. ’24 as “Mayzie La Bird”, Morgan O. ’24 as “The Sour Kangaroo”, and Jadyn D. ’23, Izzy F. ’23, and Payton S. ’23 as “The Wickersham Brothers”. Our talented and dedicated cast did a great job of bringing this imaginative show to life on our stage!
