Unstoppable Viewpoint Team Wins at the FIRST Robotics Fall Classic
by Lance Argano-Rush, Robotics Coach and Upper School Science Teacher
This past Saturday, Viewpoint kicked off the school year by competing in the FIRST Robotics Fall Classic. This event was hosted by the Southern California Regional Robotics Forum at Valencia High School in Placentia, CA. The one-day tournament played the 2018 game “Power Up” and was attended by 20 teams from southern and central California. After graduating a few pivotal members of last year's team, this was an opportunity for Viewpoint rookies and returning members to step up into leadership roles and prepare for the 2019 season.
Five Viewpoint students built a new robot in just under two weeks and participated in the event. After a bit of a rocky start to the day with an untested machine, the students worked diligently through the engineering problems, methodically solving them one by one. By the end of the day, the team had the machine working seamlessly. In elimination bracket play, solid mechanics, coaching, and driving proved to be a unstoppable force. The team, paired with a community team from San Diego, upset each of the higher-seeded teams on their way to victory, winning both the tournament and the Spirit Award. While FIRST Robotics will not release a new task until January of 2019, our team is already hard at work analyzing their performance and looking for ways to improve both process and design.
The members in attendance would like to thank all of the Viewpoint staff for making this possible, but a special shout out goes to Shipping and Receiving as well as Purchasing for dealing with next and same-day deliveries of parts to help us with the manic build schedule. The robot was “finished” a mere seven hours prior to the start of the event. We couldn't have done it without you!
