Upper School Theatre Students Present a Playful Adaptation of Sense and Sensibility

From November 21-23, our Upper School students took the stage at the Carlson Family Theater (CFT) for three performances of “Sense and Sensibility,” bringing Jane Austen’s classic novel to life. Directed by Theatre and Dance Department Chair Scott Feldsher and produced by Director of Support Services Lara Conklin, the production highlighted the humor, emotional depth, and bold theatricality of Kate Hamill’s adaptation.

“Sense and Sensibility” follows the fortunes and misfortunes of the Dashwood sisters, sensible Elinor and impulsive Marianne, after their father’s sudden death leaves them financially vulnerable and socially exposed. Set in gossipy Regency-era England, the story explores how the sisters navigate love, heartbreak, reputation, and societal expectations. With its energetic pacing and witty perspective, Hamill’s adaptation mixes Austen’s timeless themes with a fresh, modern sensibility reminiscent of “Bridgerton.”

“Hamill creates a theatrical world where the protagonists are buffeted by circumstances between time and space, carried like so much luggage and thrown into events that swirl around them. It’s a strong and grandly theatrical vision of Austen’s novel, which is why it works as a script,” Feldsher said.

Students in the Technical Theatre Program were also heavily involved in the production, supporting the show behind the scenes and helping transform the CFT through their work in design, technical elements, and stage management.

“The final part of any adaptation is the staging, and our very talented ensemble has worked hard since September immersing themselves in the literary world of Jane Austen and the theatrical world of Kate Hamill to create their own unique Viewpoint version of ‘Sense and Sensibility,’” he added.

Next up, our theatre students return to the CFT this spring for “Mean Girls: High School Version” from April 17-19 and the Seventh and Eighth Grade production of “The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf” on May 15-16. We can’t wait to see them take the stage again!

Viewpoint School recognizes Rayna Schein & Robert Flachs and The Papariella Family for their leadership support in the Viewpoint Fund and their symbolic sponsorship of this event as donors in our Head of School Circle.
