A Sweet Success: Middle School Students Take the Stage at Annual Spelling Bee

Viewpoint’s Middle School Spelling Bee had students buzzing with excitement during a Middle School assembly on Tuesday, January 27, in the Carlson Family Theater, bringing together 22 spellers from across grade levels.

Organized by faculty members Lowry Sweney and Cherie Boss, the annual event was introduced in recent years to replace the National Geographic GeoBee, which ended in 2019, and has since become a beloved Middle School tradition.

This year’s competition featured an enthusiastic group of spellers and a supportive audience. After several rounds, Gabriella Scher ’30 and Sachin Shivakumar ’32 emerged as the finalists, with Sachin earning the top spot.

Beyond the excitement of competition, the Spelling Bee offers a meaningful academic experience for students.

“It’s fun and educational,” said Stephen Chan, Head of Middle School. “You can see the students really thinking about how a word is spelled. You can see that all of the years of Membean vocabulary instruction, language arts lessons and reading are coming together as you watch the kids work through the words on stage.”

Congratulations to all of this year’s spellers for their hard work and dedication!
