The VSSA supports the non-academic activities of the School.

Our parent volunteers work closely with administrators, faculty, and staff to benefit all students and to build a sense of community among our families

There are many ways you can volunteer. Although some of the VSSA-sponsored events and services produce revenue, the VSSA’s primary purpose is “friend raising” and “fun raising.” We direct any monies raised back to VSSA-sponsored events and activities to support our students, faculty, and parents.

From Pages to Performances: Authors and Student Talent Showcased at the Annual VSSA Book Fair

On February 10, the Viewpoint School Service Association (VSSA) hosted its Annual Book Fair at Barnes & Noble in Calabasas, bringing together TK-12 students, families, faculty, and friends for a full day celebrating reading and community.

Throughout the day, shoppers supported VSSA initiatives benefiting students and faculty while also helping grant teachers’ classroom wish lists. For every $20 spent on books, families earned one raffle ticket, with six tickets awarded for every $100 spent, adding an extra layer of excitement to the evening’s festivities.

The afternoon began with guest author appearances and book signings in the children’s section. Families had the opportunity to hear short readings and meet acclaimed authors Kelly Yang (Finally Heard, Little Bird Laila and books from the Front Desk series), Morgan Matson (Promchanted, Gradchanted, Firefly Summer, Since You’ve Been Gone) and Benson Shum (Anzu the Great Kaiju, Anzu the Great Listener).

Student performances followed, showcasing the depth of talent across divisions. Colin Brun ’26 and Ellen Su ’28 opened the entertainment with a flute duet, followed by performances from Suzuki Strings and Primo Orchestra. The cheerleaders energized the crowd, and the evening concluded with solo and duet performances by Mollyrose Dassa ’32, Anya Emerson ’28, Ella Haim ’27, Olivia Lakhani ’26, Gabriella and Matthew Scher ’30 and Siena Siderman ’32.

The event concluded with a raffle drawing, capping off a lively day that once again united the Viewpoint community around a shared love of books, creativity and connection.

Families who were unable to attend can still participate by shopping online through February 19 using code 12938023. A portion of proceeds from each purchase will benefit the VSSA in support of student and faculty activities.

A Growing Tradition: Record Vendor Turnout at This Year’s VSSA Holiday Luncheon & Boutique

This year’s highly-anticipated VSSA Holiday Luncheon and Boutique on November 14 at Sherwood Country Club, brought together more vendors than ever before, offering our Viewpoint community a joyful chance to shop, savor, and socialize. From a robust selection of jewelry and clothing, to beauty and culinary products, plus home decor, the festive boutique was abuzz with holiday shoppers.

Guests enjoyed exciting new additions, including a live painting by portrait and sneaker artist Ava Mae, who created an original portrait of Kobe Bryant. Each year, 20% of proceeds from the boutique support VSSA’s efforts to enhance student and faculty activities.

“I’m so excited to be part of this wonderful event and to support such a meaningful cause. Giving back has always been important to me, and I’m grateful to contribute to something that benefits the community,” said Mae.

Attendees spent the afternoon enjoying the lively atmosphere, catching up with friends, and experiencing the many special touches that made this year’s holiday boutique memorable. After sitting down for lunch, guests participated in the event’s raffle before hearing remarks from VSSA Co-Presidents Mana Partow and Carin Maddox-Smith, as well as first-year parent and VSSA Holiday Luncheon and Boutique Chair Monica Elnekaveh.

“The school was so welcoming to us. During our first week here, it felt like everyone already knew my son by name, and I remember thinking how special this community is and wanting to give back,” shared Elnekaveh. “I love putting events together because they foster connection, which is so important. That’s why I decided to chair this beautiful event.”

The program concluded with one final round of shopping, bringing a warm and joyful close to this cherished annual tradition.

Record-Breaking Turnout at Our Annual VSSA Community Life Breakfast to Kick Off New School Year

More than 200 attendees gathered at our school’s annual Community Life Breakfast, presented by our parent volunteer group, the Viewpoint School Service Association (VSSA), a cherished tradition that celebrates connection and involvement. Families enjoyed a warm welcome and learned about volunteer opportunities available throughout the year.

Upon arrival at the Woodland Hills Country Club, attendees enjoyed coffee and breakfast while socializing and connecting with one another. From Homecoming and the Book Fair to Luncheons, Parent Education events, Employee Appreciation initiatives, and opportunities to support the Viewpoint Fund, families discovered the many ways they can get involved and make a difference.

Following breakfast, the program featured remarks from VSSA Co-Presidents Carin Maddox-Smith and Mana Partow, Head of School Mark McKee, and Board Chair Andy Keiffer, along with updates from Enrollment Head Laurel Baker Tew, Advancement Head Olivia Powell, and Mandarin Chinese Teacher and Admission Coordinator Ming Hodgson.

“What excites me most about the year ahead is the chance to continue strengthening our bonds as families,” said VSSA Co-President Mana Partow. “I envision events that bring us together not only as parents, but as friends, and moments that remind us of the simple joys of childhood. My hope is to create an environment where our children see us modeling what true community means.”

Her emphasis on community set the stage for Head of School Mark McKee, who connected this year’s theme of Excellence to the shared strength that comes from working together.

“Viewpoint has its core values of love, honor, imagination, optimism, and excellence. I love that we are lifting up one of these values as a theme for the year, a chance to reflect on it and explore our relationship with the concept,” said McKee. “Excellence means something different to everyone, but it is not about being the best or being perfect. It’s about each student striving to do their best, and when everyone is performing at their best, it raises all boats. At its heart, excellence is about community over competition.”

That message resonated with VSSA Co-President Carin Maddox-Smith, who emphasized the importance of modeling excellence in daily life.

“We really try to instill in our household striving to a level of excellence,” Maddox-Smith echoed. “Excellence is the quality of being outstanding or extremely good. Keep in mind, excellence is not perfection, but it’s the pursuit of what you do in order to get there. It’s setting the bar high so that you do achieve excellence.”

With the support of our new and returning parent volunteers, we look forward to an excellent year of connection, growth, and opportunities that prepare our students to be World Ready.

Annual VSSA Spring Luncheon Celebrates Volunteer Spirit, Student Leadership, and the Power of Community

Each spring, the Viewpoint School Service Association (VSSA), our parent volunteer group, hosts its annual luncheon—a celebration that brings together members of our community to connect, and recognize the extraordinary achievements of our Upper School students in the areas of community service, building community, and fostering belonging.

This year’s event, held at the Sherwood Country Club, invited guests to enjoy a curated shopping experience, lunch, and a festive atmosphere—including a prize for Best Kentucky Derby Hat—all set against the stunning backdrop of rolling hills and spring sunshine.

As the program began, Autumn Kreshek ’25 was presented with this year’s Community Service Award by Shelley Kierman, Associate Director of College Counseling. This award, established by VSSA, honors an Upper School student who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to serving both the Viewpoint community and the greater world.

“Autumn is the kind of person who doesn’t need to hold an official title to lead and initiate,” said Shelley Kierman. “She cares deeply about service and helping others, and she operates from a place of empathy and kindness. She finds ways to incorporate service into every aspect of her life, as a natural outpouring of her character.”

The program continued with the presentation of the Viewpoint School Belonging and Community Life Award, which recognizes students who exemplify leadership, compassion, and a deep commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive school environment. Established in 2025 as an evolution of a prior award honoring social justice and ethical leadership, this new recognition celebrates students who go beyond, engaging in meaningful efforts to build community and foster belonging.

In its inaugural year, three exceptional Upper School students—Zooey Jeong ’25, Jake Sklar ’25, and Summer Garland ’25—were honored for their unwavering dedication to academic excellence, volunteerism, active participation in education and celebration of cultures.

“Each of these students has given of their time, ideas, and talents to creatively offer education and insight that nurture our welcoming and inclusive Viewpoint environment,” said Patricia Jackson, Chief Belonging and Community Officer. “They are accomplished beyond their years, and it has been my great pleasure to watch them grow and develop into the amazing humans that they are.”

Following the awards, guests were treated to moving solo performances by Upper School Concert Choir members Julian Dans ’25, Lily Davis ’25, Nathan Danese ’25, and Carly Nelson ’25, under the direction of Middle & Upper School Choral Music Teacher Ms. Carrie Dietsch.

Congratulations to our exceptional award recipients and the entire Class of 2025. Your actions and voices continue to shape a better world, and we can’t wait to see where your leadership takes you next!
