Girls Varsity Softball Team Is Finals-Bound and Heading to the CIF Division 6 Championships

Our Girls Varsity Softball players will be swinging for the fences when they compete in the CIF Division 6 championship game for the first time since 2008. The team will face Ganesha High School on Friday, May 17, at 1:00 p.m. at Deanna Manning Fields.

The team's journey to the finals has been nothing short of remarkable. They clinched the Gold Coast League Champions title undefeated and fought their way through tough playoff rounds, emerging victorious each time.

"It was a team effort winning our second consecutive league title, but the playoff run has been and continues to be the work of our softball veterans; Emjay Peck ’26, Carly Nelson ’25, Anniston Aragon ’26, Autumn Kreshek ’25, and Alora Glass ’27," said Jeff Alkazian, Head Softball Coach. "They've kept us in the games with timely hitting and stellar defense, while our new players have also made significant contributions."

Highlighting stand-out moments of the season, Coach Jeff mentioned the team's competitive spirit against strong opponents like St. Bonaventure, Emjay Peck's stellar performance in the semi-final game, and the remarkable comeback against Calabasas High School, where they turned a 0-7 deficit into a 9-7 victory.

"Coach Rick and I took over the program from Coach Pam O. seven years ago, and we had big shoes to fill,” added Coach Jeff. “This season has been a Cinderella story; no one expected us to come this far. Every win feels like a bonus.”

As they prepare for the championship game, Coach Jeff's message to his team is clear: believe in yourselves, fight until the end, and make history.

"This is the classic 'David and Goliath' scenario. We're up against a very strong team who've scored a ton of runs, but we have the best pitcher in CIF D6, and a group of players who will never give up. I am so proud of each and every one of them," Coach Jeff affirmed.

For those looking to support the team in person, tickets can be purchased online via GoFan. General admission tickets for adults are priced at $12.00, while high school students and children aged 5-13 can purchase tickets for $5.00 each. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to cheer on the Viewpoint Varsity Softball Team as they compete for the championship title!

Viewpoint Boys Track & Field Team Make History as 2024 Division 4 CIF Champions

Congratulations to our Varsity Boys Track & Field team for their historic win at the 2024 CIF Championship this past weekend. Surpassing all predictions, they scored 57.5 points, securing Viewpoint's first-ever CIF team title for Track & Field.

Senior Captain Jude Holling ’24 played a vital role in maintaining Viewpoint's lead throughout the meet with outstanding performances in the 110 hurdles, 400 meters, and 300 hurdles. Additionally, Freshman Darren Haggerty ’27 significantly boosted the team's performance with excellent showings in both the long jump and high jump.

Eric He ’25 secured the CIF championship title in the 200 meters, setting a new personal record and earning an additional 10 points for the team. Olly O’Connor ’26 delivered an impressive performance in the 3200 meters, further contributing to the team's success.

"Since Coach Jerry Brown and I started coaching together last year, we've made it a priority to ensure that every one of our athletes sees us as one cohesive team,” said Coach Patrick Neville. “Sprinters cheer for distance runners, distance runners cheer for throwers, and regardless of the discipline, we are all united. This singular focus has been instrumental in the success we've achieved."

The 4x400 relay team, consisting of Senior Captain Kasey Lee ’24, Jude Holling ’24, Noah Oduwole ’26, and Eric He ’25, secured a second-place finish, setting a new school record and ultimately securing Viewpoint's CIF team title. The team's success was celebrated widely by our coaches, athletes, alumni, and supporters, marking a historic moment for our Track & Field program.

"Besides Jude and Kasey, our team is quite young, so we should have a good chance of achieving this again,” added Neville. “We also have the highest number of returning points next year, so our prospects are very promising."

Congratulations once again to our CIF Champions, and here's to many more victories in the years to come!

Viewpoint's Varsity Boys Lacrosse Team Embarks on a Life-Changing Volunteer Trip to Medellín, Colombia

What began as a simple idea during a morning lacrosse practice turned into an unforgettable journey for Coach Brendan Smith and nine of our Viewpoint student athletes. Organized by Coach Smith and the students themselves, the trip took place over Spring Break, where the group taught lacrosse and built relationships with local communities in Medellín, Colombia.

"I looked into programs where we could travel to teach lacrosse and discovered Lacrosse the Nations. It's a nonprofit organization that uses lacrosse to motivate kids to stay in school and off the streets, providing scholarships for families and schools,” shared Smith. “It seemed like the perfect fit for what we wanted to do.”

This journey brought the team to the Colegio Lola Gonzalez School and the Amiga Community Center in Medellín, Colombia, where they volunteered their time, engaging with elementary and middle school students.

"The experience was incredibly impactful for both our team and the locals we spent time with. It went beyond teaching lacrosse; it allowed us to connect with the kids on a deeper level and witness firsthand the positive influence sports can have on their lives," said Smith.

"The living conditions and lack of opportunities in the community we visited were truly eye-opening. Many families don't have basic necessities like electricity and running water," shared Micha Van Pelt ’24. "Experiencing this gave us an important perspective on what the trip was going to be about and who we were helping."

When they weren’t volunteering, the group explored Medellín, went on hikes, took a boat ride, and indulged in the local cuisine. Encouraged by the success of this trip, Coach Smith is already planning future excursions, with hopes of annualizing this experience.

"The more you see the world, the more you open yourself up to other cultures and experiences, which ultimately makes you a better person. Even though I don't speak a word of their language, I felt completely at home. Experiencing this has not only made our students better lacrosse players but also better individuals. That's why I want to continue providing these opportunities for everyone," Coach Smith explained.

“This is a trip I’ll never forget, and I believe it's the same for the kids we shared memories and laughs with,” said Van Pelt ’24. “Having the chance to do this again, even as an alum, would be incredible, and I truly hope it becomes a tradition.”
