The Department of Theatre and Dance engages students from Transitional Kindergarten through Twelfth grade in a form of “serious play” which strives to connect the mind and body while freeing the imagination. Our students are encouraged to go beyond the commonplace and courageously manifest new ideas and emotions on stage.
The variety of courses, productions, and programs offer students with all levels of experience a solid understanding of the artistic process with an emphasis on individual growth and collaboration. Material for our productions is carefully chosen for age and skill appropriateness, and with the intention of integrating our work into Viewpoint’s rigorous liberal arts curriculum as a means of supplementing and challenging ideas and themes explored daily in our classrooms.
Upper School: Students enjoy a wide range of electives and performance opportunities in Dance, Theatre and Musical Theatre through classes in our daily curriculum as well as the audition-based co-curricular Conservatories of Theater and Dance programs. Elective offerings in Dance include Ballet, Modern, Hip Hop, Tap and Choreography. Offerings in Theatre include Acting, Directing, Playwriting, and Musical Theater. Many Upper School students are also active in producing their own work with faculty supervision through our Lunchtime Theater, 24-Hour Play, and Senior Project programs. The department also takes advantage of the abundant artistic resources available in Los Angeles through field trips and opportunities to learn from guest teaching artists.
Middle School: Offerings become more specialized. Starting in Sixth grade, Acting and Dance training is offered to all students through the Arts Rotation curriculum, including opportunities to audition for the Middle School musical or take part in the Shakespeare project. By Seventh and Eighth grade, students may choose theatre, dance, or musical theatre electives and may audition for the Middle School fall musical and the spring play production.
