Sixth Grade Celebrates the Amazing Milestone of Reading 1,000 Books This School Year
On February 23, in the Fletcher Family Library, the Sixth Grade celebrated an impressive milestone: the 95 students in the Sixth Grade have collectively finished a total of 1,000 free-reading books! Under the leadership of teachers Cherie Boss and Catalina Rivera, our Sixth Grade program has encouraged students to cultivate a rich reading life – through a free reading program during classes, a celebration of outside reading done in partnership with our librarians, and encouragement for interested students to embrace free reading and writing through the Literary Honor Society. National trends show that free reading sharply drops during the middle school years, despite the well-studied benefits of free reading for students’ academic success. Mrs. Boss shared that in her 31 years of teaching at Viewpoint School, she has never seen students read so many books.
We congratulate each and every student who has kept this important habit alive by embracing the reading life! Bravo to our Sixth Grade readers!
