This past weekend we were grateful and excited to grace the stage once again with live musical theatre for the first time since the fall of 2019. Based on the Disney Channel Original Movies, Disney’s Descendants explores what it means to choose your own path no matter where you come from.
It is present-day, and in the kingdom of Auradon, all of Disney's beloved heroes and royalty are living happily ever after, safe from the terrifying villains and troublesome sidekicks they have banished to the magic-free Isle of the Lost. That is until Ben, the benevolent teenage son of Belle and King Adam (The Beast), offers a chance of redemption for the troublemaking offspring of the evilest Villains. Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos- the children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella De Vil, and Jafar - are welcomed to Auradon Prep to attend school with the children of their parents' sworn enemies. Now entering a completely foreign world and way of life, the four Villain Kids have a difficult choice to make: should they follow in their parents' wicked footsteps or learn to be good?
The show has it all: high-energy production numbers, complex characters that have heart, and a timely message that resonates with all of us. At its core, Descendants is a musical about empathy, tolerance, and acceptance. It takes place in two fantastical worlds filled with classic stories and characters we all know and love, seen through a fresh, new lens.
Auditions were held at the end of January and the show included 70 students both onstage and behind the scenes (our biggest turnout). During the rehearsal process we were lucky to connect with and have Kara Saun the costume designer of all the Disney's Descendants movies as a guest artist to talk to our cast about creating the looks for the worlds of Descendants. Ms. Saun gave an inspiring presentation, shared some of her pieces from the movies, and gifted us with a beautiful one-of-a-kind "Magic Mirror" to hang in our dressing room during the run. We were truly touched by her generosity and honored to have her at our Sunday matinee. Theatre is a place of coming together, and we were thrilled to be together sharing the experience with a live audience at three sold out performances. Our wickedly talented cast did a fantastic job of bringing this iconic show to life!
