On October 28 and 29, Viewpoint School's Fletcher Family Library welcomed award-winning author Julie Berry for two lively virtual visits with students. Ms. Berry has written numerous books in multiple genres of fiction – from picture books to Young Adult fiction. In 2017, Ms. Berry won the Printz Honor Award for her YA fiction novel, The Passion of Dolssa. Recently, Ms. Berry’s YA fiction novel, Lovely War, was named a 2020 YALSA Teens’ Top Ten Book.
At the Middle School Virtual Assembly on October 28, Ms. Berry spoke to the students about her journey from reader to author, exploring where ideas come from, the main elements every story needs, and how students can begin writing their own stories.
On October 29, Ms. Berry visited with Upper School students to discuss her World War I novel, Lovely War. Telling students that if you want to write a good book you have to do the work, Ms. Berry presented about her extensive research into World War I, the racial prejudice of the 1900s, and the popular music of the era. Ms. Berry even played a selection of ragtime music for the students on her piano.
Viewpoint was very pleased to welcome Ms. Berry to the School and hopes to continue partnering with authors throughout the year to inspire a love of literature. Click here to learn more about Ms. Berry.
