About

COVID-19 Response and Remote Learning

We have created this area on our website to provide updated information about our plans to the entire community. The health and safety of your family is and always will be our highest priority.

We are in daily contact with local health authorities and are using their updates and guidance in formulating our plans. Our task force includes several doctors and medical professionals from the Viewpoint community to help us make well informed decisions. Please keep this page bookmarked and available; it will be frequently updated with new information, which will also be conveyed via weekly email updates during this current situation as well as email and text messages when appropriate.

If you have questions about how the school is managing issues related to COVID-19, please email Don Anderson, Director of Campus Safety and Security, at don.anderson@viewpoint.org or 818-591-6664.

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS

Coronavirus infections are transmitted in a manner similar to many flus and respiratory illnesses through droplets in the air from a cough or sneeze.  While the risk of coronavirus is serious, please keep in mind that the risk of contracting influenza is still more signficant. Increased awareness and practice of the following precautions, by both adults and students, is strongly advised.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after using the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, and after touching public surfaces. If this is not possible, then use a hand sanitizer gel.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze by using a tissue that you immediately throw into a trashcan or by covering your face with your elbow (bent arm) if no tissue is available.  Do not cough or sneeze into the open air or into your hands. And wash your hands immediately afterward.
  • In public places, put distance (about six feet if possible) between you and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • If you have not already done so, get a flu shot. The flu is an ongoing concern and currently is even more dangerous than the coronavirus.
  • Do not come to school if you don’t feel well. Students, employees, and parents who are symptomatic of illness are encouraged to remain home until symptoms, including but not limited to coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and fever, subside. Teachers will work with students to ensure every effort is made to minimize academic impact.

INCREASED SCHOOL HYGIENE MEASURES

  • The school is taking additional steps in our daily cleaning, including using a disinfectant that is designed for use in hospital and healthcare settings.
  • Our Athletic Department has placed additional precautions in place to help keep our student-athletes in the cleanest environment possible.
  • Our food service provider, SAGE, has let us know about the extra steps they are taking, in addition to their daily protocol, to help protect the community from the spread of viruses. These include:
    • Using disinfectant throughout each meal period.
    • Cleaning and sanitizing the entire buffet, shelves and decor items twice a day.
    • Changing out all publicly-handled serving utensils every 15 minutes.
    • Encouraging students to use the provided hand sanitizer before entering the servery.
    • Communicating all updated and additional protocols at pre-shift meetings daily with all the Team Members.
    • Preparing a contingency menu in the event they become short-staffed.

At this time, our current policy remains in place—a student is sent home for a fever and is required to stay at home until fever-free for 24 hours without medication. Each individual case of illness will be evaluated to ensure the safety and health of students, faculty, and staff, and we have asked our nurses to use their judgment should a child exhibit symptoms they deem concerning, even in the absence of a fever.
  • In the event that a child or staff member is identified to have traveled to an area experiencing an outbreak of COVID-19 AND has symptoms of respiratory illness (such as fever and cough), that person will be sent home and the school will immediately contact the Los Angeles County Department of Health.
  • Viewpoint is preparing to engage in Virtual School in the event that the campus is required to be closed due to a pandemic outbreak. Families should consider how long-term Virtual School would impact routines and make preparations in advance if possible.
