Congratulations to Briar B. ’14, Jordan B. ’14, Ryan D.’14, Annahstasia E., Jack L. ’14, Elliot R. ’13, and Rachael V. ’14 for winning Regional Gold Keys, as well as to the 10 Viewpoint students who won Silver Keys, and the 22 students who won one or more Honorable Mention Keys for their outstanding work in art and photography.
Established in 1923, The Scholastic Art &Writing Awards is the most prestigious recognition program in writing and the visual arts for students in Seventh through Twelfth Grades in the United States. Nationally, more than 200,000 works of art and writing were submitted for review this year, with 2,500 submissions from private and public schools in Southern California. Past winners include: Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, Bernard Malamud, Joyce Carol Oates, Richard Avedon, and Andy Warhol.
“I am so proud of our program under Department Chair Brian McBean,” said photography teacher Charlie Sitzer. “In addition to our students’ success in Sculpture and Photography, this is also the first year Viewpoint’s students have won Gold Keys in all four categories of competition, which also includes Ceramics and 2D art. This achievement speaks volumes about the strength of Viewpoint’s Fine Arts Program and the hard work and talent of our students.”
Mr. Sitzer emphasized the importance of entering students’ work into the Scholastic competition. “It is the perfect way for students to get real world experience as young artists, and to see how their work compares to that of their peers from around the United States,” continued Mr. Sitzer. “Our students are thriving in our new studios, and these awards are further validation of Viewpoint’s commitment to our students’ success in the arts.”
Pasadena’s Armory Center for the Arts will exhibit the work of regional award-winners in May. National winners will be recognized at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in June, when their work will be exhibited in galleries around New York City. The national awards will be announced later this month.
Viewpoint is proud of all of the 2012 Regional Award winners:
