Athletics Philosophy & Curriculum

Philosophy

Viewpoint School has embraced the concept that athletics plays a meaningful and necessary role in the overall education of the child. The notion that a solid athletic program can complement a strong academic curriculum is one that has inspired us to provide our students with many ways to wear Viewpoint's colors proudly.

Indeed, the concepts that children learn in team sports provide a solid base upon which our athletes can prepare for the rigors and challenges of the future. Viewpoint School is proud of the variety of sports and many levels that we offer. From Lower School to Upper School, our students can get a taste of competition at the level best suited to them.

Our student-athletes learn to develop important character traits such as commitment, loyalty, integrity, respect for others and themselves, and an appreciation for the benefits of hard work. The environment in which these traits are promoted and developed is designed to accommodate the less experienced and to challenge our very best athletes. Inevitably, they emerge from the process as confident young people capable of making intelligent decisions and gracefully accepting the consequences. They will have experienced victory and defeat, the camaraderie of the team, the benefits of cooperation, and the passion and joy of competition.

Viewpoint School is proud of the talented and experienced coaching staff, which guides our students through this journey. They are motivated by their passion and driven by the challenge. Teachers first, tacticians second, they are committed to making the athletic experience a fun and successful one for their students. Along with our athletes, the coaches have helped establish the athletic program as a great source of pride for Viewpoint School.

  • Primary School

At Viewpoint School, we believe that physical education and athletics play a meaningful and necessary role in the overall education of our students. The School’s physical education program enables students to discover their unique talents and to develop their levels of fitness, self-assurance, and teamwork at all grade levels. Our experienced coaches teach fundamental skills and always encourage good sportsmanship.
  • Upper School

Viewpoint believes that physical education serves as an important component in the development of a well rounded student. The program provides every student with the opportunity to develop and to maintain a level of physical fitness and skill development commensurate with individual needs. This goal is accomplished through the use of drills, tasks, and activities with emphasis on development of basic skills and conditioning. The program also emphasizes teamwork and good sportsmanship among its athletes on competitive teams. Working with the School’s trainer and nurse, the Department promotes good health through proper nutrition and exercise, a knowledge of how the body functions, and an understanding of injury prevention. In addition to team sports, the program emphasizes individual and recreational sports to help students find lifetime athletic activities. These include aerobic activities, weight conditioning, swimming, volleyball, baseball, fencing, softball, soccer, basketball, and Outdoor Education.

Students in Grades Nine through Twelve must participate in two of three seasons of athletics. They may choose to participate in a physical education class, outdoor education, an independent study program, or join one of our many interscholastic teams. Each sport has teams of different levels of ability. Please visit our Team Pages for a complete listing of sports offered each season.
