Extracurricular activities are an integral part of the Viewpoint Middle School experience. Student-run clubs meet during the school day, allowing students to explore different interests and to develop friendships. Clubs such as Math Counts and Mock Trial allow students to pursue academic interests beyond the classroom and to compete with their peers at local schools. In addition, students may work with faculty to propose new clubs and activities to add to our already substantial list of offerings.
The Middle School is led by a Student Council composed of leaders elected by the student body. An election is held each semester to allow many students to participate in student government and to develop leadership skills. This Student Council works together to plan spirit days, raise funds for local charitable organizations, and to plan a student-led Assembly.
Community service projects are an important aspect of life on our campus. Students explore the issue of hunger and poverty and work together to collect canned food and to make sandwiches to feed the homeless. The Middle School partners with ARC to educate the students and allow them to work directly with a community of adults with special needs. We encourage students who are active in the community outside of school to share their interests with the student body through Assembly presentations and campaigns on campus to raise awareness and funds.
Throughout the year, students participate in afternoon and evening socials. All socials are supervised by teachers and administrators, and promote healthy, age-appropriate activities including bowling and skating. Students in the Seventh and Eighth grades may attend casual dances on campus with a professional DJ and other activities such as ping pong and basketball. The Sixth grade participates in a six-week course to teach basic ballroom dancing and etiquette, and the event culminates in a Cotillion dinner dance.
Once a year, students in each grade level travel off campus for a retreat. Accompanied by their teachers, students venture to different locations throughout Southern California to explore local natural wonders and to study science in the field. Group activities allow students to develop leadership skills and to build community.
Our dynamic schedule allows students to compete on a sports team, serve on student council, and to perform in a musical production all within the same semester. While students have many opportunities available to them, we strongly advise students to consider their commitments and to choose wisely. We believe that by participating in student life our students learn valuable lessons about time management and priorities that will serve them for a lifetime. |
